Kazakhstan expects record oilseed harvest of over 5 million tonnes

Kazakhstan’s 2026 harvest season is nearing completion. Despite a reduction in wheat acreage and adverse weather conditions, the grain harvest remains above the long-term average. Meanwhile, oilseed production could reach a record high.

According to Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Agriculture, the country had harvested 23 million tonnes of grain as of October 13. Grain and legume crops had been harvested from 96% of the planted area, with an average yield of 1.52 tonnes per hectare. Meanwhile, the area planted with wheat decreased by 1.8 million hectares. More than 72.4% of the wheat delivered to grain elevators was classified as Grade 3.

The most notable growth has been recorded in oilseed production. By mid-October, farmers had harvested 3.7 million tonnes of oilseeds - 2.5 times the volume recorded during the same period last year. The ministry forecasts that the final harvest will exceed 5 million tonnes, setting a new record.

Exports of grain from the new harvest have also increased. In September 2026, Kazakhstan exported 1.16 million tonnes of grain, up 13% compared with September 2025.

With agricultural production volumes remaining high, attention is also focused on ensuring that infrastructure is ready to receive and process the harvest. Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov instructed officials to ensure the readiness of grain storage facilities and strengthen oversight of sugar beet processing.

In 2026, financing for spring fieldwork and harvesting operations is planned to reach 750 billion tenge. An additional allocation of up to 350 billion tenge is earmarked for preferential leasing of agricultural machinery.

Preliminary results of the harvest season reflect a shift in Kazakhstan’s crop production structure: while the area planted with wheat is declining, oilseed production is increasing. At the same time, the volume of the harvest presents challenges for the agricultural sector in terms of storage, transportation, and processing
