A central theme of the declaration is the call to revise the global governance system. The countries support reform of the UN Security Council, with broader representation for Africa, Asia and Latin America. China and Russia reaffirmed their support for India and Brazil’s aspirations to play a more prominent role in the UN Security Council.
The document expresses “serious concern” over unilateral tariff measures that violate WTO rules and condemns sanctions not approved by the UN Security Council.
The group is also continuing its push to build alternative infrastructure: work on cross-border payments in national currencies, further development of the Contingent Reserve Arrangement, and phased discussions on a new investment platform.
Unlike previous summits, the declaration contains no mention of Ukraine. Instead, it calls for “maximum restraint” and for conflicts to be resolved on the basis of international law.
In the expanded format, partner countries also joined the summit: Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Nigeria, Thailand, Uganda, Uzbekistan and Vietnam.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who chaired the summit, summed up its central message as follows: “We must work to transform the Global South from rule-takers into rule-shapers.”
